Apologies if this is a super basic question but I'd like to make a column of records into links to their details.
I see an option to add a view detail link, and the option to customize that name but you can only change the name for all records.
I'd just like each name to be a link to it's details.
Do I need to use the API for this?

I think what you're after is a table with one column a link to the record details and using the field data as the link text rather than static text.
Check this in the docs http://helpdesk.knackhq.com/support/solutions/articles/5000443486-tables#columns and read through 'Link Columns' and 'Edit Column' to set 'Link Type'.
