Hi there,
First time posting, apologies if theres a better category for this.
I’ve been pitching Knack apps to a few acquaintances and they are keen to have me develop them. However I’m curious how other developers operate:
-do you use your own account, and house the app within that, so that only you edit/ have backend access? This seems problematic, especially if you close your Knack subscription
-otherwise, do you charge the client a fee to cover their own Knack subscription? Dont get me wrong, Knack is great value, but for sole traders/small businesses, $500/yr just to maintain access might be a hard sell.
Keen to hear how others operate.
Thanks!
Hi @Ned_Plimpton
In my opinion, there really isn’t another solution on the market that is as cost-effective and flexible as Knack
For $500 a year you can build a complex bespoke application with unlimited user access, obviously there are other limits, such as record count.
To answer your question, I only ever sign up new clients with their own plan. Hopefully, where possible, using my affiliate link. If you choose the route of owning the application, you will also own all of their data. Most clients would be unhappy with their data sitting in the domain and control of a third-party. This may become even more complicated when crossing borders, especially with different regulatory compliance regulations in other countries such as GDPR and HIPAA.
My approach is that they create their own account and add me as a shared builder so I can access the backend.
If the relationship changes or either party decides to move on, then there are no issues with regards to data ownership or access. I appreciate that the model of you charging them for access is a revenue stream but it does provide additional complications.

@Ned_Plimpton, welcome! It’s exciting to realise you can make a living out of building Knack apps. For some of us on the forum it’s our full-time job!
What Carl said. Your clients manages their own Knack subscription, and shares Builder access to you.
I suggest jumping onto Knack’s affiliate program, where they’ve just updated terms for better commission and a discount to clients that you sign up.
Also when you’ve contributed more in the forums, you can consider becoming a Knack expert!
Feel free to reach out to any of us in the Knack Experts directory, and I’m sure we’d be happy to hop on a Zoom chat to answer any of your questions.
