Is it possible to include a search field (linked to records of one object) in the menu / navigation bar? This way this search field is always on display on all pages and is easy to search for key records.

Not natively. The keyword search is an option for each table. Not sure how this could work as the data sources could be various depending on which tables you had on the page.
