Accessing/manipulating search views from the API

Hi - is it possible to manipulate a search view (pass it parameters effectively) from the API?

I've created a search view, but attempting to pass it field parameters just returns 404 - posting to the same url with the same values creates a record with the fields defined.

Any contextual example would be greatly appreciated.
